Best undiscovered snes games racketboy
Some of the best graphics I have ever seen in an NES game, and fun to boot! While I agree with most of the above games, The Three Stooges has no business on this list. Two other games released only in Japan that should be here are Sweet Home and Splatterhouse. Glad to see Super Dodge Ball make the list. The game is such a cult hit, but a lot of people never played it growing up.

One boss flexes for his fans and has a camera man filming his fight with you. However, this little known gem is the best game in the series. The game runs on System 32 hardware and features large sprites, detailed graphics, scaling effects, and impressive animations. Of note is that some spells show you a close-up of your foes being decimated.
You can take multiple paths through the game, ride a larger number of creatures than Golden Axe, save prisoners, and use catapults and ballistae against your enemies. You can also mount these on your creatures. Also, Gilius Thunderhead now rides atop a giant.
It all makes the game feel much more alive. This is possibly their most obscure one however. You have a walking plant, a kid named Pola Abdul sounds a lot like a certain, former American Idol judge riding an ostrich, and a character that looks a lot like Felicia from Darkstalkers, just to name three of them. The enemies are even crazier and you can tell that Capcom was having fun putting this game together. Saturn , and a giant space baboon! The gameplay has some interesting elements like the ability to purchase extra moves, health upgrades, and move upgrades after each stage.
This gives a certain strategic element to the game. The game also features tag team attacks if two players perform a special move at the same time. You also can activate special abilities by pressing both of your action buttons in mid-air. These will power you up in various ways like making you faster or increasing your damage output. Defeating him will make him appear on your high score screen. An interesting tidbit about this game is that there are cards that save your levels when you put them into the machine.
They are also multiple paths through the game. There are some interesting items you can use in the game, different weapons, cool magic spells and special moves. This one actually plays a bit differently from their other games.
You have projectiles always available to you, but have to worry about reloading your gun or having your weapon overheat. Of course, you can always fall back on good old fashioned melee combat when this happens. It gives the game a unique feel. This game also throws a LOT of enemies at you and gets really hectic at times. There is great variety to how the different characters play.
Speaking of which, this game introduces Lieutenant Linn Kurosawa. The soundtrack is pretty epic too, like the whole game in general. This game features tons of spells with varying effects like damage, healing and status buffs. You have a personal inventory you can access while playing to use your items or cast spells.
The combat is great, with lots of combo possibilities, blocks, counters, and OTG attacks. Much like Aliens vs. Predator, the combos that can be pulled off in this game by skilled players are very, very impressive. There are youtube videos of this game just focusing on combo exhibitions. The game also has branching paths throughout the game to encourage you to play it more than once.
This actually seems to be their main series as it has more iterations than the Oriental Legends games. There are lots of secrets, items, specials, and hidden stuff to be found in this series.
Knights of Valour 3 runs on the PGM2 hardware and features a shop screen, 10 characters, different paths, widescreen, a boss rush mode, level selection and gameplay that moves at a fast pace. Rare This game is being featured because many people are not even aware that a Battletoads arcade game existed.
This tops them all however. One level features slippery, ice on the ground like a platform game and another one has you shooting enemies like a Contra game. There are enemy characters who are much bigger than other Battletoads games. You can kick enemies towards the screen in a similar way to how you throw enemies in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
The cartoonish quality of the series comes out here better than ever! The soundtrack is excellent. Konami Crime Fighters 2 is a game that places a heavy emphasis on weapons.
There are tons of them everywhere and the game clearly wants you to use them. Some players have noted that two of them look like Mr. T and Hulk Hogan! The versions of the game released outside of Japan removed a character who actually dry humps and licks the players! The combat features some cool things like the ability to grab and hold an enemy while another player pummels him!
This game has a total of six buttons, as many as a typical fighting game. This allows for a lot of moves and the game even has low attacks performing by holding down and an attack button , also like a fighting game.
You also block by holding back on the joystick. You also have about two special attacks per character. The most interesting part of the game is that you can possess enemy characters and use their moves.
For some odd reason, there are also one on one fights after each stage where you control an enemy character. The American version of this game is not recommended as some features of the game were changed. The Japanese version gives you the full experience. Konami Asterix is a comic book character that is well known to people in France.
You can actually pick up enemies after you knock them down and perform different throws on them. You also have an attack that can be charged up to unleash a powerful uppercut that will knock your enemies upward Mortal Kombat style. One has you riding in mine carts while avoiding obstacles. Another has you leaping across gaps and dodging boulders like a good platform game. Yet another one has you in a boat fighting off sharks and pirates.
There are interesting challenges between levels like chariot races where you must compete against a friend as well. The game also features many great references to the source material with levels based on different books and recognizable characters as bosses. Given the nature of the license and the light-hearted nature of Konami arcade games in general, there is a lot of humor to be found in this game. Asterix fans will love this game. This might make it sound more like a run and gun game. Though weapon power ups and screen clearing bombs do certainly feel like elements borrowed from the run and gun genre.
There is also a shooter level and one where you can fly. There are cutscenes between levels that feature a lot of voice work from the actual actors from the show. If you were a fan, that should bring a smile to your face. Overall, this is yet another great arcade game from Konami. You play as a mech, similar to the ones in Captain Commando. The coolest thing about this game is how you replaces parts of your mech with various parts you can get from defeated enemies. These parts can drastically affect how your mech fights and gives the game a really nice strategic element.
There are some interesting part combinations you can have too. Also, three players can merge their mechs together to form a more powerful mech. This game actually inspired a one on one fighter for the arcade called Cyberbots also ported to the Sega Saturn and Playstation. You can also kick downed enemies in the gut or bash their head into the ground. There are items you can use against enemies. The coolest one is the pinball machine! You can even toss a motorcycle at someone!
That will feel strange to some people. Another odd quirk of the game is that boss battles continue even after you beat the boss if there are still enemies around. This game was ported to the Super Nintendo, but a couple of things were change and removed unfortunately. There was an arcade game released as well. Like the Genesis version, Michael can defeat enemies by getting them to perform in a dance number with him.
That has to be the coolest thing about BOTH games. He can also turn into a robot and fire lasers and missiles at enemies if he finds Bubbles the chimp. By default, Michael attacks with some kind of energy he emits from his hands rather than using melee attacks. You can hold the button down to charge it up to five levels, increasing its power and range. There are some cool comic book style panels before each stage fleshing out the story. Taito This is a very odd game.
It features a super hero who basically goes around super punching the crap out of everything. The intro shows him saving a woman tied to some train tracks by hitting a moving train with a megaton punch! This is a common theme throughout the game. Super punch a punk, purse thief! Super punch a truck before it hits a baby carriage!
Super punch a building to take out the armed bad guys on top of it! Super punch a giant, crab robot! Super punch a giant asteroid! Who cares, right? The special thing about this game is how you actually play it. The game features a special glove that you have to put on.
You use this to hit a sensor to knock out whatever crazy thing the game throws at you. This game has the most unique controls of any other title on this list. Both the arcade game and the SNES game got sequels. One interesting bit of trivia surrounding Sonic Blast Man is how the original arcade game was recalled after supposedly causing injuries to players.
I guess only real super heroes can punch out trains and buildings. Modern gamers will recognize him from the Marvel vs. Capcom games where he can be seen beating the crap out of Mega Man for stealing his job as Capcom mascot! This game is fun for a couple of reasons. First of all, it has this sort of old, classic Sci Fi feel to its world and characters. Also, the playable characters are awesome. You can also play as Captain Commando of course.
Plus, the game had support for four players. The game was ported to the Super Nintendo. The port is a good game in its own right, but loses some of what made the arcade games stand out. In terms of gameplay, Arabian Fight may be one of the weaker entries on this list. The game has weird hit detection and can be rather confusing to play with more than one player onscreen.
On gameplay alone, it would be easy to write off this game. Characters appear in the foreground of the screen before jumping onto the actual field of play.
Your character will also jump into the foreground of the screen for a fully animated close up when performing magic attacks. It looks extremely cool. This predates that game by three years. You can also throw enemies towards the screen.
The game loves to really put things right in your face as boss deaths are done with closeups and your character will be knocked forward into the screen when he or she runs out of lives.
You have sprite scaling, parallax effects, and animation all working together to give the game a somewhat 3D look. This was an ambitious effort from Sega.
Suffice it to say, this game has an unusual look to it that has to be seen to be really understood. Try to find a video on youtube and see how unconventional this game was for its time.
The gameplay is a bit awkward, but a skilled player can still blow through this on one life after adjusting to it. The idea is similar to Altered Beast. You play as a couple of characters who can morph into a powerful animal form for a limited time. Combos flow well in this game, and you can also attack downed enemies. The game looks and sounds great. It also features some hilarious moves like bashing a zombie into the ground before stomping on his head!
Or using a boss like a skateboard to ride across the ground! This game is great fun, though it seems there may have been some censoring and changes to the game outside of Japan. Konami This is another original IP from Konami. Due to the games unusual visual perspective, it actually used the kind of vertical screen typically reserved for 2D shooters. The game is very long and actually features a password system.
Owing to its RPG influence, you will have powerful spells in the vein of Golden Axe at your disposal. You can also block in this game and move while doing so.
The playable characters are interesting. One is a dragon and another is a fairy. The game looks excellent with some nice visual effects, including a 3-dimensional one as you drop to lower platforms.
Bosses are big and change form during battle. Capcom This game is based on a comic book that also became an animated series. As the name implies, the game features a lot of dinosaurs. The best has to be the awesome bazooka. The game also has a very cool level where you are given the option of calling in a buddy to bring around the Cadillac.
Then you can use it to drive over all of the other enemies in the stage including the motorcycle riding boss! The game plays very smoothly and has excellent controls.
It all feels perfectly fine-tuned and polished. Dash attacks are very useful, giving the combat a fast pace. Konami and Capcom really used to own this genre in the arcades. Konami This is the sequel to Crime Fighters 2.
Many times dialogue choices are so obvious usually the right answer is on the top , that they draw you away from the progressing storyline. Answering incorrectly may add some dialogue in spots, but the outcome is almost always going to be the same.
When you hear the words Action and RPG together you generally think about some super deformed little prince hacking little blobs on the screen, right? It also has cooking, temporary items that wear out, throwing weapons, such as daggers, and a vast assortment of magic items. The coolest thing out of that list is being able to cook your healing items. Unlike the cooking items, which are cool, the magic items are kinda cruddy…. The graphics in Princess Crown are simply awe inspiring, putting many Playstation and N64 game to utter shame… Overall, Princess Crown is a video game masterpiece that has every aspect that a masterpiece must have: excellent gameplay, awesome graphics, and art that just plain hurts ya.
If you are a Saturn owner you must add this game to your collection, it is a timeless classic that every gamer should play and it comes with my highest recommendation. Players command armies composed of either soldier, samurai, archer, mage, harpy, dragon, or zombie forces in an effort to capture enemy castles and leaders.
Gamers send forces of up to four generals who, in turn, command up to troops out into the world to raid castles or take on roving bands of enemies…. Dragon Force balances role-playing and strategy elements perfectly, intermittently directing the war of the land through storyline segments. And the ending is a stunning and climactic spectacle to behold. The game also offers a great deal of replayability, since storylines differ, depending on which of the eight main leaders is chosen each storyline takes roughly hours to play through successfully.
You have little blocks that fall down the screen and your job is to arrange them so that different animals get their favorite foods instead of the normal colors. Rabbits eat carrots, dogs eat bones, monkeys eat bananas, mice eat cheese, and pandas eat bamboo. Sounds pretty cute, huh? Just watching the little dogs and mice munch their way across the screen is fun, and they make little munchie noises too. But seriously this game is extremely addictive. You are dealing with up to ten different blocks five animals, five foods and each comes down in random patterns of two.
At first the game may not seem so great, only 4 cars, 3 tracks, and a weak number of racing modes make it lack depth. In fact when I started playing the game, I thought I had wasted the cash I spent on it, the framerate is horrible, the graphics are bland, and the courses are somewhat boring. You choose a boarder, choose a track, and off yah go rumbling through the snow. On the way to the finish line you are encouraged to leap off of anything and everything in order to score big air and big trick points.
You are then ranked by both time and tricks…. What is pretty, however, is the killer control. To perform stunts, you simply press a button and the D-pad, even stacking moves in order to pull off some neat combinations. The triggers are used to rotate; this helps to slow down when things are getting a bit too wily and to add flash to tricks. The response is tight and accurate, the feel is dead on, and the moves are easy and fun to pull off. Now you are talking!! Anyway, if I find more later on for any system , I will probably post a review of the game and then add it to the list.
Fighting vipers is really neat. Not to complain, just warning people, stick to the obvious choices, the saturn was not very rich in 3d fighters. But yeah, the Saturn is not a place to go for a variety of 3D fighters. Yeah, I realize Astal and Dragon Force are kinda bordering mainstream, but because those genres were kinda lacking, it put them on there.
Amazing post, just amazing. Jeff Minter, the programmer and designer of Tempest , only wrote the Jaguar version. The PSX port is actually the superior of the ports, but still has errors and inconsistencies, as pointed out by Jeff Minter himself. The ebay prices for it should indicate as much. Hi thaught ask this question,is the sega saturn version of street fighter zero 3 better than the ps2 version on the anthology edition well according to wikipedia it is.
Here is a game that didnt make the list and it is very fun. Loaded is also fun but only in short play gets old quick. Rockman X3, Megaman X4 and Megaman 8 are my fav.
Bones is an incredible game. One of my favourite Saturn games. Blazing Dragons is a great game too. Its cartoony, fun, obscure. The gameplay is reminiscent of an old 8-bit game for some reason, which is a plus for anyone keeping score at home.
The different demon transformations are quite Altered Beast-esque. I like it. Cybernator aka Assault Suits Valken in Japan game is an intense side-scrolling, mech shooter that takes you through a steep difficulty curve. You are a pilot of a ton battle mech equipped with a trusty shield and an upgradeable vulcan cannon, that later on can be upgraded to an flamethrower, a lasercannon or a missile launcher.
The shield is an essential piece of equipment because it will protect you from almost any enemy attack, even from behind.
The thing that makes Cybernator so special is the shield that makes this game less hectic than other action games. Instead you must study each enemy and learn their patterns so you know when to take down the shield and attack and when not to. The graphics were amazing, the missions were bad ass, It was full of secret areas, the cinematics were gorgeous, and the mech design was wicked.
Of course, the multiplayer is really what makes it great, and there can be some pretty intense matches when you play with a friend. Yes, these weapons do have ammunition limits, but they usually aid you in your infiltration or mission objective, whatever that may be. The unique aspect of this game is that there is no life bar. To judge how well you are fairing, look at your Assault Suit or Assault Armor.
If you have bullet holes and tattered paint, I suggest you find a new suit or armor to board. Yes, stealing Assault Suits was a neat aspect of this game, but you must be wary when doing so, or you may just be annihilated by the enemy.
This game got a bit of exposure when it was released, but many younger gamers might not be aware of it. Under normal circumstances this might seem impossible, but you have the unique distinction of being armed to the teeth, which will make it at least a little easier to accomplish your task.
The control in the game is rock solid and the large selection of different weapons gives the game plenty of variety. Besides the obligatory smart bombs you can pick up, there are eight different upgradeable gadgets at your disposal. Also very welcome is the possibility to change their attack mode at will; for example you can switch between regular or less powerful homing missiles, or lock the position of the Gradius-style multiples.
Wild Guns also delivers in every area from graphics, music, controls and challenge. This is one of the most complex 2D fighters ever created, as well as one of the most brutal and gory. The game uses the standard six-button fighter control scheme, but with all six inputs devoted to various types of weapon slashes, thrusts, and strikes, the overall sameness of the attacks can make it difficult to comprehend how to approach the game.
For the players who just want to dragon punch and fireball their way to victory without understanding that the fighting engine is not as fast nor as cross-up and throw heavy as Street Fighter II, WeaponLord will disappoint.
WeaponLord is all about taking one of the seven Boris Vallejo characters and completely annihilating the opponent… Though the gameplay holds up well even compared to modern fighters which is an impressive feat in itself, I suspect most will tire with the lack of characters and poor presentation when compared to Super Street Fighter II.
While it may be difficult to consider playing a game with Power Rangers all over it, this actually turns out to be a solid game once you get past that.
And wandering around the battlefield in giant megazords or as a massive monster is a lot of fun. Endless Duel featured the ability to boost twice, air block, and hover for a limited time, and some Suits are capable of air throws and aerial super moves.
To accommodate this, stages scroll both horizontally and vertically. Players must also rely on building high energy levels via blocking and attacking to use special moves or fire their machine guns.
Characters tend to gravitate between large cyborgs, long-range mages, and up-close werebeasts and swordsmen. Opponents will sometimes be much more powerful or much weaker than the player, adding a nice touch of realism, though the game is largely balanced. Some characters can also slide or triangle jump off stages. It plays like a classy Golden Axe with no monsters and better visuals. The beautiful graphics feature majestic castles and picturesque medieval landscapes. A lavishly orchestrated musical score fits the theme perfectly.
You can choose from one of three legendary characters, including King Author. And of course each stage ends with the obligatory boss. Actually it looks pretty funny when you kill a knight and a big salad falls out of him. By far the best feature is your ability to knock a knight off of his horse and mount the horse yourself.
The two player simultaneous action is fun enough, but slowdown is rampant at times. And while the music is excellent, the sound effects are horribly muffled. Knights of the Round is no classic, but fighting fans should take a look. Characters choose from a group of classes at the start, picking between Warrior, Wizard, Cleric, Elf, or Dwarf.
As characters continue to battle hordes of monsters, they gain experience for leveling up and more powerful equipment. While many of the enemies and a couple of bosses consist of pallet swaps, the game is pretty, controls well, and the audio is well done.
The bosses are well designed, culminating in a fierce battle against a massive red dragon that was a lot of fun for me. Another Capcom fantasy Hack-N-Slash, Magic Sword takes the player on an epic journey to climb the floor tower known as Dragon Keep to defeat the dark lord Drokmar, whose control over the Black Orb may enable him to conquer the world. You play as the Brave One, an able fighter who must use keys to unlock new equipment and free imprisoned sidekicks while navigating traps, fending off hordes of monsters, and slaying magical bosses.
The game also features two endings, offering the player a choice at a key moment to decide which one. The Lufia Series is a set of currently four fantasy RPGs all set in the same world across multiple centuries, though only two were released for Super Famicom.
The two titles are actually out of order in the time line, with the ending of Lufia 2 serving as the intro to Lufia. In the Lufia games, random encounters occur on the world map, but in Lufia 2, dungeon enemies are represented by sprites similar to one of the enemies in the group, and only move when the player moves, making it possible to dodge them.
Puzzles are a very big part of Lufia 2. Each dungeon contains several puzzles. Some puzzles must be solved in order to complete the dungeon and open new rooms leading to the goal, but there are also a few puzzles which are optional and yield special items and armaments to those who solve them.
Some of the puzzles are simple in design, such as hitting switches and levers, luring enemies to step on switches, and killing certain monsters, but there are also several very original and clever puzzles in Lufia 2. The puzzles are all very simple early in the game, but in later dungeons, some of the puzzles are very difficult…. Fans of Lufia 1 would be the people who would enjoy Lufia 2 the most.
Although Lufia 2 is technically a prequel, the story is best experienced by playing Lufia 1 first and Lufia 2 second.
