It was the sequel to the series Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. The series is introduced by science fiction writer Arthur C. Individual episodes are narrated by Anna Ford. It was followed by Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious Universe, broadcast in Beyond is a landmark in paranormal programming because it brings forth new explanations for many of the most compelling paranormal phenomena of our time; including ghosts, aliens, signs, prophecies as well as evidence of six forms of life that survive clinical death.

In Crossing Over, Edward gave readings to audience members. Readings in the show involve Edward questioning audience members with what is presented to him as information being communicated by their deceased friends and relatives.
Edward receives images and clues from the Other Side which the audience must assist him in interpreting. The audience is asked not to supply Edward with any prior information about themselves, their family or whom they are trying to connect with.
Audience members respond to Edward's statements and questions, adding any details they feel are appropriate. Edward also conducted private sessions away from the studio audience.
The subjects of these segments later talked in greater detail about the situation that led to their reading with Edward and the effect the reading had on their lives. Periodically, segments revisit people who have previously appeared on the show. Delves into the most unusual research ever conducted, including attempts to crossbreed humans and apes, actual zombie investigations and head transplantation studies.
