Cannot install windows xp from cd

Caliban XVII. I'm trying to reformat my computer, but having no luck. When I boot up with my Windows 7 disc in the CD drive, it goes to the black screen that tells me to press any key to boot from CD. Well, it would work a lot better if it didn't disable my keyboard when it did that. How in the world do I get this to work? This thread is locked.
